Senate Public Health and Welfare Hears Long-Term Care Updates

CNA (Feb. 9, 2023) – Today, the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, chaired by Senator Beverly Gossage (R-Eudora) met to hear an update on long-term care industry in Kansas.

The committee heard from the following:

  • Dan Goodman, executive director, Kansas Advocates for Better Care, gave an overview of the association and highlighted options for folks seeking long-term care in Kansas. He emphasized the need for more community-based services and providers, as well as options for Kansans seeking long-term care.
  • Leslie Anderson, executive director, Kansas Association of Area Agencies on Aging and Disabilities, gave background on the area agencies on aging, as well as presented information on the 1965 Older Americans Act and the Senior Care Act.
  • Jamie Gideon, director of public policy, Kansas Alzheimer's Association, gave an overview of the association, and treatments for Alzheimer's. Gideon advocated for a need of a state dementia services coordinator, as well as legislation to create a right to appeal an involuntary discharge or transfer from an adult residential care facility. Bills to create such appeals have been introduced in both chambers, with Senate Bill 191 and House Bill 2246 receiving a hearing by House Judiciary on Feb. 9.
The committee will meet next week for hearings on bills before them.
