Employee and Patient Relations

Worker Protections Against Violence

Kansas law now provides additional protections for Kansas health care workers who can face threats in the course of their work caring for patients. Assault of a health care worker is now a Class A misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of one year’s jail time and a $2,500 fine. 

KHA created toolkit of resources. There is a series of eight posters to be used in your facilities to raise awareness about the increased penalties for acts of violence against health care workers. Instructions and links to posters for public and employee spaces are available to KHA members.

Additional resources in our member toolkit include a template media release on the new law, a health care crimes list including statutes and a document for planning for and reporting a crime.

Employee Free Choice Act

Employees must have freedom to participate in structuring their work environment, and any threat to those freedoms is unacceptable. The Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in the 111th Congress during the early weeks of 2009. On behalf of member hospitals, the Kansas Hospital Association is standing up for employees against strong-arm coercion and misinformation.
