President's Perspective – Celebrate Hospitals and Health Care Workers this July 4

Capitol Fourth (June 30, 2023) – I hope you have the opportunity in the next week to take some time to celebrate our nation and what we cherish about this country. As we approach this time of year, Kansas hospitals are emphasizing safety and reminding their communities to practice caution and avoid the most common reasons people travel to the hospital during holiday celebrations.

We also want to encourage Kansas hospitals to join their colleagues across the country to remind everyone of the significant contributions of hospitals, health systems and health care workers play in creating healthy and vibrant communities. It is patriotic to pause and honor health care workers on this important day.

The American Hospital Association has partnered with PBS to air a 30-second television spot at the top and bottom of A Capitol Fourth national concert broadcast. AHA also will highlight stories of health care workers and their contributions via digital media throughout the PBS programming. This year's national concert in Washington, D.C., will include the NorthwellHealth's nurse choir in additional to other performers.

This year's concert will air on approximately 340 PBS member stations covering more than 180 markets across the United States, and on the show's YouTube page. The concert is simulcast nationwide on NPR, and broadcast on the American Forces Network to military members stationed or serving overseas.

Join us to celebrate, honor and reflect on the many contributions of our hospitals and health systems this holiday. There are many ways Kansas hospitals can get involved with this national event, such as hosting a watch party at your hospital. This can create a fun atmosphere for patients and staff to watch this important event together. You also could invite local elected and community leaders. Now more than ever, we need to ensure elected officials are aware of the significant impact your hospital is making in the community. If your hospital hosts a watch party, invite local media to attend and cover the event as part of their Independence Day coverage. This not only supports their coverage but helps bring attention to the contributions of health care workers within your community.

Lastly, as you post your own content on social media, please use the hashtag #WeAreHealthCare and consider tagging KHA (@kansashospitals) and AHA (@ahahospitals) to send a collective message about the work the field does on behalf of patients and communities.

All of us at the Kansas Hospital Association wish you a safe and happy Independence Day!
