(Oct. 30, 2026) – Naloxone is a safe, rapid acting, emergency opioid antagonist used to prevent an opioid overdose and is available as both a prescription product and an over-the-counter product (four mg naloxone nasal spray). KHA partnered with the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy and Kansas Council of Health System Pharmacy to create naloxone resources to help our members understand the difference between the dispensing of prescription naloxone pursuant to the Kansas Board of Pharmacy naloxone dispensing guidelines; and separately, the distribution of over-the-counter naloxone, which is not subject to the statewide protocol guidance.
The Kansas Naloxone Program, administered by DCCCA, a Kansas substance use disorder treatment provider, provides free naloxone nasal spray plus training to health care providers, facilities, community organizations, and Kansas residents. DCCCA receives funding for this project from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services through the State Opioid Response grant initiative from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The program and free naloxone are contingent upon continued Federal, State & Local Funding and available supply. DCCCA currently has OTC naloxone available for free distribution by your facility. To order the free OTC naloxone visit https://www.dccca.org/program/kansas-naloxone-program/. In the additional comments section of the form, please indicate the number of kits you would like. Please order in increments of 12. Valid quantities include 12, 24, 36, 48, etc. For questions about the program, contact DCCCA at naloxone@dccca.org.
