(April 4, 2025) – Statement from AHA on Tariffs Announcement
America's hospitals and health systems rely on a wide range of drugs, medical devices and other essential supplies to deliver safe, effective care. The American Hospital Association shares the Administration’s goal of strengthening domestic supply chains for these essential products. This goal must be balanced with avoiding disruptions to patient care that often depend on the availability of internationally sourced devices and treatments. AHA appreciates that the Administration has exempted pharmaceuticals from reciprocal tariffs. At the same time, AHA recommends that the Administration consider tariff exemptions for medical devices. It is especially critical to have exceptions for medical products already in shortage and for which production in countries subject to the increased tariffs supply a significant part of the U.S. market. AHA continues to review the details of the tariff plan to assess its impacts on hospitals and health care systems and will work with the Administration on ensuring the availability of the drugs, devices, and supplies that hospitals need to serve their communities. For additional information about tariffs, see the AHA Feb. 4 letter to the administration HERE.
