Billing Procedures for Prisoners in County Custody

Medical Billing (March 10, 2023) – As the House Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice was addressing Senate Bill 228 this week, the topic of billing for prisoners in county custody was discussed. A reminder that billing for prisoners getting medical attention in county custody should first be billed to an individual's group accident and health insurance policy, medical service plan contract, hospital service corporation contract, hospital and medical service corporation contract, fraternal benefit society or health maintenance organization contract before proceeding to the process outlined in K.S.A. 19-444 and K.S.A. 22-4612.

The legislation being discussed by the legislature ensures the process set out in the current statute is continued.
