(Feb. 20, 2026) – The American Hospital Association has released a comprehensive webpage highlighting key facts, causes, impacts and solutions to help hospitals and health systems reduce the risk and severity of postpartum hemorrhage. These resources provide practical guidance on how organizations can prepare for obstetric emergencies, train and support clinical teams, implement measurement and quality improvement strategies and strengthen support for patients throughout maternal care.
Postpartum hemorrhage—excessive bleeding following childbirth—is the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. It can cause a rapid drop in blood pressure, resulting in organ failure or death if not recognized and treated promptly. However, PPH is preventable and treatable with appropriate protocols, early identification and timely intervention.
AHA's initiative underscores its commitment to improving maternal and child health by equipping hospitals with tools and examples of best practices to prevent, detect and manage PPH. These efforts are critical to improving maternal outcomes and ensuring safer care for mothers and newborns.
