Review of Licensed Radiology Technologist Exemption

Chest XRay (Aug. 21, 2026) – The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Radiation Control Program have convened a stakeholder group to discuss concerns about KSA 65-7304 based on survey findings. The stakeholder group, including Terry Siek and Larry Van Der Wege on behalf of KHA, has reviewed the exemption in the linked statute. It allows unlicensed individuals to perform radiologic technology procedures if they have received proper training, are supervised, and complete 12 hours of continuing education annually. Patient and clinician safety and quality issues have been documented.

The KSBHA and KDHE Radiation Control Program stakeholder group is working on potential changes to statutes and/or regulations to improve safety and quality. As part of this process, KHA received information from a member survey and will use the aggregated data to support our advocacy. It is still early in the process, and any statutory or regulatory changes will need to go through the state administration and the legislature. KHA will continue to keep members up to date. Email Larry Van Der Wege at lvanderwege@kha-net.org with questions or comments.
