President's Perspective – Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

(July 2, 2026) – Let me be among the first to wish you a happy Semi-quincentennial as we celebrate our country's 250th anniversary. I hope you all take time to enjoy patriotic festivities with family and friends. We know Kansas hospitals have been emphasizing safety as we approach this milestone Independence Day, reminding their communities to stay safe and avoid the most common causes of hospital visits during holiday celebrations.

The Kansas Hospital Association would like to join members, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Safe Kids Kansas in reminding Kansans of the importance of safety this 250th Independence Day. Make sure your festivities follow safety recommendations for fireworks and outdoor grills. With the World Cup and Independence Day coinciding, additional hospital resources are available to members. Check out  the Fireworks Safety Messaging, Fireworks Safety Social Media Graphics, and the Fireworks Safety Video, all part of the Health Care Tools and Resources website, to help keep everyone safe during this exciting summer month.

Thanks to data collected through voluntary reporting by Kansas hospitals and administered by the Office of the State Fire Marshal, we know the person igniting the firework is most likely to be injured, and the hands are the most commonly injured body parts. The highest incidence of injuries is caused by mortars or artillery fireworks, as well as other fireworks like parachutes, fountains and spinning items. Always use fireworks outdoors and keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of accidents. For more fireworks safety tips, go to  the Office of the State Fire Marshall.

Grilling is another favorite part of many July 4 gatherings. Use grills only outdoors, away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area, and never leave your grill unattended. Clean your grill regularly to prevent grease fires.

All of us at the Kansas Hospital Association wish you a safe and happy Independence Day!
