Kansas Newborn Screening Program Adds Krabbe Disease to Testing Panel

Kansas Newborn Screening Program (March 6, 2026) – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Kansas Newborn Screening Program began screening for Krabbe Disease on March 2, as part of the blood spot screening program. This screening requires no additional effort from the hospital.

KS-NBS aims to protect and improve the health of all newborns in Kansas. More information about Krabbe Disease can be found in the KDHE press release, Kansas Newborn Screening Program Adds Krabbe Disease to Testing Panel.

With just one small blood sample, over 37 serious and potentially life-threatening disorders can be identified. Many of these conditions on the screening panel are not visible at birth or during routine checkups. Each year, more than 35,000 Kansas babies undergo the newborn screening shortly after birth.
