KS-HAN Health Update: 2026 Multi-Country Andes Strain Hantavirus Outbreak Associated with a Cruise Ship
(May 15, 2026) – This week, a Kansas Health Alert Network
update from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment reported KDHE is monitoring three Kansas residents who may have been exposed to the Andes strain of hantavirus following contact with a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship. The ship reported 11 cases and three deaths globally as of May 12, 2026. There are currently no confirmed cases of hantavirus in Kansas, and the risk to the general public remains extremely low.
