(Sept. 25, 2026) – Improving birth outcomes for mothers and babies, particularly in rural and underserved communities, requires innovative approaches that extend beyond traditional prenatal care. Wraparound care models that integrate clinical services with community-based supports help address barriers such as transportation, behavioral health needs, nutrition and access to health education. One evidence-based approach, Centering Pregnancy, combines prenatal health assessments, education and peer support in a group setting. By utilizing care teams that may include nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, community health workers and doulas, the model promotes stronger patient engagement, greater social support and a more comprehensive approach to address both medical and social needs during pregnancy.
To expand access to this proven model, the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund is seeking to support implementation at three sites, including Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics and hospitals with affiliated RHCs. Selected sites will receive $10,000 in implementation funding, along with approximately $30,000 in additional support provided through the Centering Healthcare Institute for training, technical assistance, coaching, billing guidance and implementation resources. The initiative aims to strengthen local prenatal care capacity, improve coordination between providers and hospitals and reduce the need for patients to travel outside their communities for care. Expected outcomes include improved birth outcomes, increased participation in prenatal care, greater patient confidence and knowledge, stronger support networks and enhanced continuity of care. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis while funding remains available, offering health care organizations an opportunity to bring a nationally recognized maternal health model to the families they serve.
