AHA, Other Groups Push Back on CMS over Drug Acquisition Cost Survey Communication
(Jan. 16, 2025) – In a
Jan. 12 letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association and other organizations representing more than 3,000 hospitals requested CMS correct statements the agency has made that wrongly suggest hospitals are required to complete the Outpatient Prospective Payment System Drug Acquisition Cost Survey.
CMS's ODACS FAQ document includes a response to Q. 1.7 stating, "All hospitals paid under the OPPS between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, are part of the survey design, and all such hospitals are to respond to the survey." However, there is no federal requirement for hospitals to do so. AHA also outlined in the letter hospital concerns about the burdens imposed by the drug acquisition cost survey, stating that "those burdens alone are reasons for hospitals to choose not to complete a non-mandatory survey."
