Congress Begins Work on FY 2025 Appropriations

Washington4 (Mar. 27, 2024) - Now that Congress has concluded the fiscal year 2024 budget, attention is turning quickly to writing the FY year 2025 appropriations bills. While both chambers are likely to begin operating on a compacted timeline, the conclusion of this budget process will likely extend beyond the November election. Earlier this week, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Kay Granger (R-TX) announced her resignation from the post. This is likely to cause disruption in the near term.

However, the House is looking to receive requests for congressionally directed spending items, or earmarks. Earmarks for hospitals usually fall into one of two categories, facility improvements and equipment purchases. Once inserted into a spending bill by a sponsoring member of Congress, the Health Resources and Services Administration manages both types of earmarks at the Department of Health and Human Services. Kansas’ two House members requesting earmarks this year are Congressman Jake LaTurner and Congresswoman Sharice Davids. Links to their request forms are below:

Internal office deadlines for these requests are quickly approaching (March 29 for Congressman LaTurner and April 2 for Congresswoman Sharice Davids). However, if more time is needed for a completed request, extensions may be requested. Senate deadlines are not set yet. Rest assured, the Kansas Hospital Association’s federal policy team is fully prepared to answer any questions you might have about this process and provide the necessary technical assistance.
