Christina has been a nurse for more than 17 years. Christina traveled from her home to a larger city regularly to see an endocrinologist. During an exam, her doctor discovered nodules as he palpated her thyroid. Over the next few years, he monitored Christina’s thyroid. Christina wanted to find a physician closer to home to keep an eye on her thyroid.
I wanted a female doctor to do my thyroid surgery. I first met Dr. Michelle McGuirk when she did my colonoscopy. After that, I was convinced that she was the doctor I wanted to see for my thyroid.
I knew I didn’t have to say, “How bad is the scar going to be?” I was confident that Dr. McGuirk would do her very best to minimize the scar. She did a beautiful job placing the incision in the natural crease of my neck. After a few months of healing, it has all but disappeared.
Dr. McGuirk was very knowledgeable and thorough. She laid out my options and covered all the potential outcomes. I never felt pressured to have surgery in the two years that Dr. McGuirk carefully monitored my thyroid. She listened and was patient, and we decided together when it was time for surgery.
My whole experience at CRMC was excellent. The biopsy performed by Dr. Gutschenritter was much less traumatic than others I had experienced. The surgery team was great. I wish I could remember everyone’s name to give them individual recognition. They all did their jobs well, while respecting my privacy.
My mother also received great care at CRMC. She had surgery with Dr. McGuirk. Her situation was complicated by COPD, and anesthesiology did a remarkable job.
My thyroid journey has taught me to have surgery before it becomes an emergency. That way you can choose your surgeon and your hospital. I’m glad I chose Dr. McGuirk and CRMC.
