Health Insurers Announce Prior Authorization Reform

This past week, several U.S. health insurers, including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Cigna, announced plans to streamline prior authorization requirements. All the companies emphasized the use of automation and digital tools to reduce administrative friction for providers.

Upcoming Medicare Laboratory Data Reporting

Applicable laboratories, including hospital outreach laboratories, will be required to report private payer data for Jan. 1 through June 30, 2025, during the reporting window of May 1 through July 31, 2026. CMS will use this data to set Medicare payment rates that will take effect in 2027.

Mandatory Ambulatory Specialty Model: Jan. 1, 2027

The Ambulatory Specialty Model is a mandatory CMS payment model that begins Jan. 1, 2027. It is designed to hold outpatient specialists financially accountable for managing chronic conditions such as heart failure and low back pain.
