Social Worker Helps Colleagues and Community

Amy Osner (Aug. 11, 2023) – The Kansas Hospital Association's Health Care Worker of the Year Award highlights hospital employees who have made a significant contribution to the betterment of their hospital. These individuals are nominated for this award because they routinely go above and beyond the call of duty.

Social worker Amy Osner is well-versed in navigating a variety of crisis situations. As a social worker at Coffey County Hospital, Osner works with all populations including colleagues, patients and the community. She makes herself available, even if it is a weekend or at night. Osner's presence is calming and her assistance is invaluable. She connects the person or family in need of assistance with the appropriate services. She has a particular passion for mental health wellness and advocates regularly for improved services and processes that help individuals by serving on community and statewide boards.

During the pandemic, Osner established a grief support group and supported staff through tremendous hardships. Mental health visits in the ER have drastically reduced because she developed a rapport with the physicians who now bring her to clinic appointments to identify and address symptoms early. She also brought a stronger focus on the signs of postpartum depression to the obstetrics program, even helping avert a tragedy when a new mother was exhibiting signs of postpartum psychosis.

Osner's dedication to colleagues and patients is exhibited in big and small ways. She regularly donates gift baskets to brighten someone's day. She comforts patients and families dealing with loss. After a significant crisis, she facilitates debriefings and offers a safe space for individuals to talk through their thoughts and feelings. As a colleague noted, "She handles her job with grace and love. Her door is always open. She provides great strategies to deal with trauma or difficult times and is there to listen whenever needed."

Osner will be recognized, along with other Health Care Worker of the Year nominees, during the KHA Awards Luncheon at the 2023 KHA Annual Convention, Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Hyatt Regency Wichita/Century II Convention Center in Wichita.
