President's Perspective – Trustee Education and Strategic Planning Resources

Critical Issues (March 24, 2023) – Kansas Hospital Association staff were thrilled to see so many hospital trustees at our recent Critical Issues Summit earlier this month in Wichita. We recognize many board members are unable to attend these two days of education. Therefore, our team has captured take-away videos and board discussion guides from our speakers, so KHA members can bring this education into their boardrooms.

To assist with this effort, the videos and discussion guides for boards are on the KHA website and our Kansas governWell site. Topics include The Disruptors – How Big Tech Will Change Health Care; When Hospital Trustees Lead – in the Boardroom and in the Community; Legal Issues that Plague Hospital Boards; Hospital Governance in Challenging Times; and Physician Strategy and Governance.

As a reminder, Kansas governWell is a member-only resource. Kansas hospital staff and trustees will need to login. Go to http://www.KansasgovernWell.net and enter:

During the roundtable discussions at the Critical Issues Summit, members mentioned the need for additional resources on strategic planning. The Setting Strategy topic area on Kansas governWell includes education and best practice resources to advance the board's knowledge and capacity for strategic success. Resources include trends affecting health care delivery, educational videos, written board briefings, in-boardroom virtual education programs, customizable performance dashboards and a sample strategic planning retreat agenda.

If you didn't know, KHA staff and governWell advisors can join you in person or virtually to do planning; provide in-boardroom sessions on state or national trends and issues; facilitate a review of the hospital's mission, vision and values; and administer a strategy sounding board on any aspect of strategy and planning (e.g., SWOT vs. SOAR, strategy maps, Achieve it, ClearPoint, NRHRC resources).

These types of resources and services are included in the Kansas governWell program. There are no additional fees. When working with a KHA member, governWell advisors will select the educational sessions, resources and templates that are the best match for what the CEO and board want to accomplish. Please let us know if there are additional trustee resources that could be useful for your hospital.
