Decline in Child Vaccination Coverage During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Vaccination (Oct. 2, 2020) – In early May, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement urging childhood vaccination as rates dropped due to the pandemic. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on childhood vaccination rates for children in Michigan were studied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published in the May 22 MMWR. The CDC reported that vaccination coverage declined in all milestone age cohorts, except for birth-dose hepatitis B coverage, which is typically administered in the hospital setting. The American Medical Association has provided resources to help boost vaccination rates during the pandemic. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently hosted a virtual townhall on preparing practices for the 2020-2021 influenza season. Immunize Kansas Coalition also has a host of vaccination resources for providers.
