Charge Nurse Helps Build Units from Ground Up

Barbara Boswell (June 23, 2023) – The Kansas Hospital Association's Health Care Worker of the Year Award highlights hospital employees who have made a significant contribution to the betterment of their hospital. These individuals are nominated for this award because they routinely go above and beyond the call of duty.

It takes vision and more than a dash of can-do spirit to build a new medical unit. Barbara (Babs) Boswell, charge nurse, was integral to the shaping and development of the Medical Surgical Unit/Intensive Care Unit for the recently opened AdventHealth South Overland Park.

Boswell exemplifies great leadership qualities including integrity, excellent communication, collaboration, empathy and mentorship of her team members. She balances clinical and teaching responsibilities. Team members say she is a leader who advocates for her staff and is consistently calm, flexible and positive.

Prior to the hospital's opening, she was a key player in developing the AdventHealth Hospital Readiness plan. During this time, she established a medical/surgical unit based on policies and standards that optimized clinical and business decisions. In addition, she serves on the Chief Nursing Officer Advisory Council and has led performance improvement projects designed to improve the patient experience. She also established the hospital's first unit-based council, which empowers staff members to participate in clinical and business decisions affecting the delivery of care at the unit level.

Bosell was recently awarded the Outstanding Team Member of the Year for embodying AdventHealth's service standard, "Love Me." She also volunteers with Project Uplift, a community partnership assisting the Kansas City unhoused community.

Boswell will be recognized, along with other Health Care Worker of the Year nominees, during the KHA Awards Luncheon at the 2023 KHA Annual Convention, Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Hyatt Regency Wichita/Century II Convention Center in Wichita.
