Pharmacy Tech Navigates Complex Process, Positively Impacts Patient Outcomes
(June 16, 2023) – The Kansas Hospital Association's Health Care Worker of the Year Award highlights hospital employees who have made a significant contribution to the betterment of their hospital. These individuals are nominated for this award because they routinely go above and beyond the call of duty.
If a map needed a human avatar, it might select Pharmacy Tech Allison Amrein, CPhT, with Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph. Amrein connects uninsured patients with prescription pharmaceuticals through AVC’s Medication Assistance Program.
Amrein began coordinating the MAP nearly 15 years ago. Through MAP, AVC St. Joseph has connected patients with hundreds of thousands of dollars of free prescription medication every year. This is thanks to the efforts of Amrein who likens the process to an enormous flow chart running through her brain. As every participating pharmaceutical manufacturer has their own formularies and criteria, Amrein quickly identifies which programs patients qualify and which ones best meet their needs. She then serves as a navigator and advocate working her way through the process to secure the medication.
As a result of her efforts, AVC St. Joseph has connected patients to $31 million in mostly brand-name medications not available to them through other assistance programs. This has helped prevent trips to the ER and hospital readmissions, benefiting the patient, provider and community.
Jim Garrelts, vice president of Pharmacy for Ascension Via Christi shares his observation on Amrein's impact. "Allison is so dedicated to ensuring patients' access to the medications they need to maintain their health that she has been known to deliver prescriptions to the patient, whether they are living in a home or on the streets."
Allison will be recognized, along with other Health Care Worker of the Year nominees, during the KHA Awards Luncheon at the 2023 KHA Annual Convention, Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Hyatt Regency Wichita/Century II Convention Center in Wichita.
