Hospital Discharge Data Supports Strategic Planning for Hospital Boards

STAT Current, reliable data for strategic and financial planning is critical to hospital leadership. The Kansas Hospital Association appreciates that need and offers a variety of data-related products and services to our members. One of these is the inpatient and outpatient data collection program. KHA member hospitals submit inpatient and outpatient discharge data directly to the Hospital Industry Data Institute, HIDI. HIDI is a data company within the Missouri Hospital Association and is our primary data partner.

There is no fee to KHA members to submit the data or to access reports from the Analytic Advantage reporting program. Analytic Advantage PLUS, the online reporting tool accessed from Analytic Advantage, is where the KHA hospital-level data resides. The site was recently updated with the second quarter of fiscal year 2017 data and now contains October 2011 – March 2017 inpatient and outpatient data.

Whether considering adding a new service, bringing in a new physician or consolidating with another facility, it is important to have an understanding of the patient activity in your service area. Analytic Advantage PLUS provides KHA authorized user’s access to strategic planning tools including patient profile and origin reports, customized hospital discharge reports and executive strategic dashboards. Through the tool, users can run reports identifying their market share and analyze utilization of both inpatient and outpatient hospital services in any geographical area. Users can identify their service area; see where patients in their service area go for care and the type of services that they seek. Zip code, county, region and state classify service areas. Generated reports identify service lines by Medical Diagnostic Category, Diagnostic Related Group, and diagnosis and procedure codes. Revenue codes can provide a more granular view of the activity. The data set contains discharges from Kansas and Missouri hospitals. Additionally, HIDI collaborates with surrounding states to provide patient out-migration data.

The Analytic Advantage site also houses hospital specific Medicare payment policy reports that identify the impact of proposed or implemented regulatory changes on hospital operations, Monthly Utilization Reports and MED PAR (Average Hospital Charges for Medicare Patients) reports. Access Authorization forms are available on the KHA website. For assistance with access to the site, please contact Dee Lewis at (785) 233-7436. For assistance with training, please contact Sally Othmer at (785) 233-7436.
