Congratulations to our 2010 Community Connections Awardees

KHA is pleased to announce the six hospitals across Kansas that are the recipients of the 2010 Community Connections Awards. View their award presentations on the KHA YouTube Channel.  

CORES - Community Outreach Regarding Excellence in Students
Republic County Hospital, Belleville
The CORES program brings together coaches, sports medicine professionals, athletic trainers, nutritionists, sports psychologists, sports management directors and Republic county youth grade 7 thru college in order to develop core strength and agility followed by educational programming.

Healthy U - A New School of Thought
Sabetha Community Hospital, Sabetha
Healthy U is a free-of-charge, 12-week, healthy lifestyle education program that features weekly lectures educating participants on successful weight loss management and healthy living. The program lectures are led by a physical therapy assistant/health promotions specialist, a registered dietician and a medical doctor.

Healthy Kids Initiative
Labette Health, Parsons
The Healthy Kids initiative offers education and assistance to children with type 1 diabetes and helps to prevent type 2 diabetes in Labette county and surrounding communities.

Health Connections’ Support of St. Gianna Health Clinic
Kingman Community Hospital, Kingman
The St. Gianna Health Clinic provides free or reduced-cost health care services to Kingman County and surrounding area citizens who are uninsured or at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Basic health care, including treatment of acute or chronic conditions, follow-up care from ER visits, disease prevention education, instructive care for chronic conditions and referrals to specialists are provided to those who qualify.

Primary Care Clinic
Cheyenne County Hospital, Saint Francis
The goal of Cheyenne County Clinic is to increase access to care for a challenged segment of Cheyenne county residents minimizing the utilization of the emergency room, acute care and other more expensive avenues of care.

CHOC Youth Development
Satanta District Hospital, Satanta
The Community Health Organization Committee provides free and preventative youth development programs to Haskell County children in kindergarten through twelfth grade. In a safe environment, kids hear other kids share that it’s okay to refuse negative peer pressures.

Thank you to all of the 47 hospitals that shared their hospital-based programs with us. All 70 programs will be featured in our upcoming Community Connections booklet. Both KHA and AHA will highlight these programs, as we work to tell the hospital story in Kansas and in the nation's capital.

In addition to a Community Connections Award, these hospital awardees were recognized at a KHA-hosted media/award event in their community and $1,000 was awarded back to their winning community program. 

The Community Connection Award will not be given in 2011.

In 2011, KHA will be focusing our efforts on the Community Needs Assessment requirements in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The Community Connection Award will not be given in 2011. KHA will look to our members for feedback on this award program as we determine whether to bring it back in 2012. Share your feedback with Cindy Samuelson.
