Ransomware, a type of malicious software designed to block access to a facilities system and data until a sum of money is paid, is becoming more prevalent. To educate health care providers, the departments of Homeland Security, Justice and Health and Human Services issued technical guidance. The HHS document
provides an overview of the risks of ransomware, some preventative measures a facility can take and the appropriate way to respond. Recommended actions include educating personnel and implementing certain preventive and business continuity measures. The guidance recommends that, if infected, organizations should immediately report incidents to their FBI Field Office Cyber Task Force
or Secret Service field office
for assistance, and to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center
